It was founded by Jerry Creech and opened to the public in 1994. Located just off Interstate 20/59 at exit 177A on Highway 31-W, it is housed in an old railroad depot building which was built in 1892.

It was founded by Colonel Charles Fendig on February 13, 1960 with his wife's help. As of today, it is one of only two museums dedicated to this war in all of America.
