About Pembroke Pines, FL

The city of Pembroke Pines started as agricultural land occupied by dairy farms and only really grew after World War II as servicemen returned home and were retiring. The first two subdivisions were called Pembroke Pines. One of the first homes in the city was built in 1956 for the city’s first Mayor, Walter Smith Kipnis. He suggested the name Pembroke Pines because of the pine trees growing near Pembroke Road. It was then known as the "Village of Pembroke Pines" and was incorporated into a village in 1959. City services were added in the 1960’s after an election led to the city’s creation. Today, Pembroke Pines is the 2nd most populous city in Broward after Fort Lauderdale
